Three carved pumpkins

Live in the Quebec City area or in Mauricie and looking for Halloween plans with the kids? Good news: there is no need to drive all the way to Montreal. Between Old Quebec, the Aquarium and the museums of Trois-Rivières, there is plenty to fill your October weekends, with activities designed for every age. Here are our five ideas, with the dates to mark on the calendar.

In short: with toddlers, go for the Aquarium du Québec and the Petit Champlain party; with 6 to 12 year olds, book an activity at Musée Boréalis or Musée POP in Trois-Rivières.

In Quebec City

Three carved pumpkins

1. Halloween at the Aquarium du Québec

From October 1 to November 1, the Aquarium brings out its decorated pumpkins and offers a rally for kids. Costume days, when everyone comes dressed up, take place on October 30 and 31 and November 1. A gentle outing, perfect for little ones who do not like to be scared, and one that works rain or shine.

2. Petit Champlain Family Halloween Party

On Saturday, October 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the narrow streets of the Petit Champlain district host a free Halloween party. Kids are invited to come in costume: a great chance for a festive first round in a picture-postcard setting, at the foot of the Château Frontenac.

In Trois-Rivières

3. Le tribunal de l'étrange at Musée POP

On Saturday, October 17, the Old Prison of Trois-Rivières opens in the evening for a Halloween activity aimed at families with kids aged 9 to 12. Departures run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are required, so do not wait too long.

4. Circus Papyrus at Musée Boréalis

Inside the former pulp and paper mill turned museum, Circus Papyrus is a Halloween activity designed for 6 to 12 year olds and their families. It runs on October 24, 25 and 31 and November 1, with three departures a day: 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Since it takes place indoors, it is a good option even on a rainy day.

On the way, in Drummondville

5. The Little Monsters' Village

Halfway between Quebec City and Montreal, the Village québécois d'Antan presents its Halloween version for kids on Saturdays and Sundays until October 25, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children come in costume and explore the village in a festive mood. Do not mix it up with the Haunted Village, held in the evening: it is for ages 13 and up only.

Which outing for which age?

  • Under 6: the Aquarium du Québec (especially on costume days) and the Petit Champlain party.
  • Ages 6 to 8: Circus Papyrus at Musée Boréalis and the Little Monsters' Village.
  • Ages 9 to 12: Le tribunal de l'étrange at Musée POP, a slightly more mysterious evening for the older kids.

Our tips

  • Book early for activities that require reservations, like the one at Musée POP: October evenings fill up fast.
  • With little ones, choose daytime activities and save the evening for older kids.
  • Plan warm layers under the costume: October afternoons can be chilly in the streets of Old Quebec.
  • For outdoor outings, like the Petit Champlain party, check the weather and the official website that morning.
  • Combine two activities in the same city to make the drive worthwhile, for example Musée Boréalis in the morning and a stroll in downtown Trois-Rivières in the afternoon.
